You should have the nvidia driver loaded:
lsmod |grep nvidia
IF that previous command returns nothing, what happens when you type:
modprobe nvidia
If you get an error like "FATAL: Module nvidia not found", then you
probably need to build and install the module. You should probably have
the packages "build-essential" and "kernel-package" installed.
If you do not get an error modprobing, the last few lines of dmesg might
be useful.

| Aha, I see something wrong here:
|
| peter at 64studio:~$ uname -a
| Linux 64studio 2.6.17-2-multimedia-486 #1 PREEMPT Tue Jun 27 10:40:20
| UTC 2006 i 686 GNU/Linux
|
| and I was trying to use the
| nvidia-kernel-legacy-96xx-2.6.21-1-multimedia-486
|
| so probably that's why the nvidia-kernel module is not found, and I have
| to upgrade the Linux kernel.
|
| In Synaptic I find the linux-image-2.6.21-1-multimedia-486 package which
| is what I need, I hope so and will try it now ... Ok installed fine
|
| Now change the /etc/X11/xorg.conf's Driver to "nvidia" again, killall
| gdm, gdm
| and I should see the nvidia driver loaded ... mm, not working, I still
| have the same result from uname -a.

| I also found out about ENVY
| <http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html> on this HOWTO
| <http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=363542> . It's a script to
| automatically configure nvidia drivers . But now it's time to turn
| down the machine for me, I'll check it out myself tomorrow.
| Take care.

| Maybe it's important to add this piece of the log file
| PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 4000 AGP 8x]
| (or from peter at 64studio:~$ lspci -tv
| <http://www.pixelbeat.org/cmdline.html>)
| Maybe I should try the nvidia-glx-legacy-71xx
| instead of nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx ?
| Tomorrow , I'll give it a go.

| Hi,
|
| I've followed the advise on the FAQ NR 14
| <http://64studio.com/faq_user>
| to install my nVidia GeForce MX 4000 AGP card,
| to get GLX support for Blender
| (I get this message when I try to run Blender: Xlib:
| extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0")
| points me to the distro)
|
| but when I change the xorg.conf Driver "nv" to "nvidia",
| I get no GUI at all.
|
| Currently I've got xserver-xorg-video-nv installed
| (I think that's the driver my card uses now)
| and
| nvidia-kernel-legacy-96xx-2.6.21-1-multimedia-486
| and nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx removed again.
|
| I added the Xorg.0.log file from /var/log/
| but looking at it makes me think it didn't even try to load
| the nvidia driver
| and the Xorg.0.log.old was just the same
|
| I don't know where to go now .
| Any directions welcome ..
|
| cheers
| Peter
