Thanks for the input, Tim.

I have already found the website you referred to, and got some
additional help from the list, but I still can't understand how
64studio installer set up the boot sequence.  At boot, I have the
choice menu, which is actually located on hdb, but I can't find what
gets me to hdb from the origin on hda as directed by the bios.
When I choose 64studio, it starts to boot, but stalls (see my first
message on this subject for details.)
About 4 days ago I found a failed task message I had overlooked before:
 mdam: No arrays found
 Failure:
But I have no idea what's missing, or whether it has anything to do
with the boot failure.
