Oh the memories. Debian unstable was my desktop distro for many years.

I would like to see the error that it produces when you try:
aptitude purge sysv-rc-bootsplash
This is what I would likely try next.
dpkg -r --force-all sysv-rc-bootsplash
Of course, without knowing the nature of the problem, I am just stabbing
in the dark.
