Did you install the binary driver from NVidia?
Download the driver from nvidia.com
then run:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run -a
then "modprobe nvidia"  (it will do this automatically from now on)
then "/etc/init.d/gdm restart"
