[64studio-users] disabling 3d acceleration

Quentin,
I guess I didn't explain myself very well. In the original mail I tried to
explain that I already have the nvidia driver working (by installing
nvidia-glx packages as you suggest) but only for the 2.6.18 kernel. When I
try to use the testing kernel (2.6.21) the system freeze after it tries to
start the xserver.

My question was more general - how can I disable the requirement of the
xserver to start with 3d acceleration so that I _would_ be able to work with
the nv driver, even though it does not support 3d acccelration. I want to
have this option because I don't need 3d acceleration, and generally the nv
driver integrates better with the kernel as far as I know. Joseph suggested
that I try to disable AIGLX loading to be able to use the nv driver. I tried
that, and although I had no more error messages, the xserver still would
not run.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Yoav

(I tried to disable the DRI and GLX extensions in xorg.conf but it didn't help - disabling DRI just led to an error (EE) AIGLX: DRI module not loaded.)

This is fortunate because the nvidia kernel that was installed is the 2.6.18 kernel (I think it is from the etch repo), which worked fine. Later when I realized that the testing repo was disabled, and I tried to update the kernel, I ended up with the 2.6.21 nvidia supported kernel and modules, with which the xserver started but only to completely freeze the computer after a period of 5-30 seconds of operation. I rolled back to the 2.6.18 kernel and the system is running fine, but I would still like to be able to just use the nv module and give up the 3D acceleration.
