Hi Daniel,
One is a Pioneer and one is something I got in a bin, just wrapped in
anti-static plastic, no box. K3b tells me it's a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW
SH-S183L and the other is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-212D, if that means
anything. The TSST drive has writemaster capabilities, which I haven't
looked into yet.
I should back up a little. When I first installed 64 Studio, I had a
Memorex IDE DVD drive and I installed 1.0. But I really wanted to go
SATA, and when 1.4 came out, I did a fresh install and had no trouble at
all with anything.
The only command line option I ever use is vga=795 so that my 1024x1280
LCD monitor won't keep popping up little warnings that the resolution is
wrong, but I had to do that with Debian too. With 1.4, there was no
trouble booting from the SATA DVD drive.
I was originally going to do a dual boot with Windows 2000, but the
process to get Windows to recognize my SATA hard drives was too
cumbersome, so I nixed it. I didn't even want Windows to see those
drives, but it insisted. Yeah, I know Win2K isn't supported anymore, but
a lot of people use it. 64 Studio had no trouble with my SATA hard
drives during either install or since. So, chalk one up for your team!
I'm thinking of yanking the M-Audio card (since I just got a Firepod on
sale:)) and also a hardware modem that I was going to use for faxing,
but never have, and then doing a fresh install of 2.0, mainly for some
house-cleaning.
My big question when installing any kind of Linux system is which
modules I need? I seem to have a lot of them, and I don't know why or
what my hardware really needs.
Thanks for the great distro and for being so good about helping us all
out! This is probably the friendliest project I've ever come across:)
Take care,
-Susan
