Install 2...

 > install 1 set ext3 /media/hda3 in partitioner, configured fine.

install 2 set / partition only.
leaving ext3 data partition to auto-configure.
install is clean, reboot.

[ctrl]+[alt]+[f1] login as root:

#df -hT  (shows /)
set hostname
install nVidia
# halt restart

login to Desktop.
data partition icon in computer browser,
double click gives "libhal_free_dbus_error".
mkdir /media/hda3 setup fstab ext3
restart gives icon hda3 on desktop,
access and read/write user (ok!).

jackd 0.103.0-6~etch1 (thanks Susan)
audacity 1.3.3-1~etch1
Don't configure soundcard yet, leave defaults.
qjackctl starts fine, audacity starts fine.
hit record shows PortAudio-4062 in_2 in_3
close audacity, stop and quit qjackctl.
no problems.
