If you run sensors-detect and allow it to write to your system config, 
then the applet will probably start working.

If not, you're looking for lines like this in the console output from 
the sensors command:

temp2:     +29.0°C  (high =   +80°C, hyst =   +75°C)   sensor = diode
temp3:     +30.5°C  (high =   +80°C, hyst =   +75°C)   sensor = diode

These two sensors represent the thermal probes under the CPUs on my 
dual-processor motherboard. It's a cold day today :-)
