That shouldn't be necessary, as Gimp 2.4.3 is in the testing branch now, 
and you should be able to get it installed without breaking Gnome. On my 
own machine, I had to remove the 64studio package, then re-install it 
after the upgrade.

I also had to remove and reinstall some Ghostscript and CUPS packages to 
get the latest scribus-ng package. I think that was due to the upgrade 
to Gutenprint 5.
