OK, it's probably a different problem to the one Ben had then.

Please try this...

1. Boot the laptop with the network cable out

2. After reaching the login screen, switch to a console with ctrl-alt-F2

3. Log in and run:

# tail -f /var/log/syslog

4. Plug in the network cable

Does the freeze-up occur? If so, are there any clues in the syslog output?
