Ok, when I boot it gives me the white screen just as it starts X - and 
the system hangs.  I managed to get it going again by re-installing the 
relevant packages, but I broke it again when I  installed Beryl.

I got Beryl working (And I don't see a performance difference in my 
system with it running) but now it kills me on the boot. Are there any 
log files you would like to see?
