 What about using update-manager for that?

 The default APT sources are now Debian/etch Debian/etch-security and
 64Studio/stable, so as long as the user doesn't touch them update-manager
 will show only the updates coming from Debian/etch-security (as
 Debian/etch and 64Studio/stable don't change over the time).

 Furthermore if the 64Studio/testing APT source is, then active update-
 manager can be used to install the testing updates as well, which would be
 nice.
