Have a look at 79 here:

that's the point in the code that disable the Debian menus. Unfortunately
the script makes not backup of original configuration file, so you
will probably have to extract it again from the gnome-menus package:
http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/testing/pool/main/g/gnome-menus/
you can enter its contents with mc for example. However the script will try
overwriting your changes at every upgrade, like for bug #296 :/ I'll think
about possible fixes..
