It seems you installed the wrong kernel.  The 2.6.19 kernel is a SMP 
kernel, even though is is not indicated as such.  This is a new move in 
Debian, taken because a SMP kernel on a single core machine just acts as 
a multicore machine with one core... Same performance and less problems 
especially for newbies.

Yes, the 1.3.0 release should install the correct kernel by default.
