Have you tried making the kernel module? I did this using the following 
method:

apt-get install module-assistant gcc nvidia-kernel-common
m-a update
m-a prepare
m-a a-i nvidia

You should then do apt-get install nvidia-glx (if you haven't already) 
and it should work fine (TM) :)
