There are people doing supercomputing with Linux on the Itanium; HP
leads the Gelato project in this area:

The problem I have with Itanium is that it's like a return to the old
days, before commodity computing, when the high-end machines run a
completely different, incompatible architecture. Fortunately there are
now people running HPC applications on AMD64, which has a trickle-down
benefit for us desktop users.
Interestingly, the fastest (known) AMD64 system in the world, Thor's
Hammer, has nearly twice the number of Gflops as the fastest Itanium
system, Tera-10:

Cheers!
