Have you tried the binary package from Debian already?

The Debian package seems to be built against a later version:

http://packages.debian.org/testing/libs/libgnutls13

As for why a looping sampler needs SSL support, I have no idea at all. 
Maybe it's so you can go shopping on the internet for loops :-)
