Hello Andy-
The "nv" driver is the open-source free driver being developed
independently from nvidia. It's not bad, but doesn't do any 3D
acceleration as far as I know.
The "nvidia" driver relates to the binary-blob based driver distributed
by nvidia. It has all the bells and whistles.
If you are just running on the one monitor, you can get the fancy nvidia
driver directly from 64studio -
Make sure you have :
deb http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/64studio_1.2.0.apt/ 64studio main
in your /etc/apt/sources.list (replace the 1.2.0 with 1.1.0 or 1.0.0
depending on the version of 64 studio you are using)
and then you should be able to run:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
That should install a the kernel modules and some common files for
running the driver.
Then you would change the "nv" in your xorg.cong to "nvidia" to launch
the driver. After that, it's setting up the config file for the higher
resolution. (Most likely if you find the line in the xorg.conf with:
SubSection "Display"
<blah blah>
Modes "800x600 (and other resolutions)" <-put 1440x900 in for the
first resolution in the quotes (you can leave the others, but you prolly
won't use them often.)
If you have other problems with the nvidia driver, you can check over at
http://nvnews.net where the guys in the linux forum have seen about
everything. The developers of the linux driver post/read the forums as
well.
Hope this helps-
ian
