In my Gnome menu I have Gnome - Desktop - Preferences - Screen
Resolution, this only allows 640x480 at 60 Hz.

Lots of Xorg.0.log references to ATI.
Dozens of lines of (II), 2 or 3 lines of (EE).
The (II) errors have a common format as follows:
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "nnnnxnnnn" (hsync out of range)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "nnnnxnnnn" (bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan)
That situation was shown for all resolutions displayed in the log,
including 640x480:
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "640x480" (bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "640x480" (bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan)
Later in the Xorg.0.log file:
(--) RADEON(0): Virtual size is 640x480 (pitch 640)
(**) RADEON(0): *Default mode "640x480": 25.2 MHz, 31.5 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(II) RADEON(0): Modeline "640x480" 25.20 640 656 752 800 480 490
492 525 -hsync -vsync
Finishing the Xorg.0.0log with the (EE) stuff I mentioned, in order of
(EE) appearance:
(EE) end of block range 0x1fffffff < begin 0xe0000000
...
(EE) end of block range 0x1fffffff < begin 0xe0000000
...
(EE) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
End of Xorg.0.log data.
Shouldn't my display be reporting its model information into the
system via DDC? MANY prior distros (I'm not a Debian user though; more
RPM based) would exactly recognize my older CRT monitor on my older
systems. My current display is a 9 month old Optiquest Q9 LCD,
connected via VGA cable (both the LCD and the motherboard only provide
VGA type connections).
