There is a bug in recent versions of ALSA which prevents this working in 
duplex mode - see 'Problems with pcm_multi' here:

I've been discussing with John Rigg about how to tackle this problem, as 
it doesn't affect the majority of ALSA users, so it's gone unfixed for a 
while.
