[64studio-devel] Nvidia + JACK

Hello Eduardo,

I have the exact same motherboard (Asus M2NPV-VM) and here are my notes
on the process I ran through to install the NVidia proprietary driver
with 64Studio 1.1.1 :

1) install from cd (downloaded from 64studio - I used the version 1.1.1
install disk)

2) add repos to /etc/apt/sources.list:
#deb cdrom:[64studio 1.1.1 (1)]/ 64studio main

deb http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/64studio_1.1.1.apt/ 64studio main
deb-src http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/64studio_1.1.1.apt/ 64studio
main

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free

#For the updated libxine1 that fixes the dvd audio sync problem from
1.1.2
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ experimental main

3) use apt-get update to get key info to add gpg keys :

gpg --recv-keys (long key part, something like 16 numbers and cap
letters)
gpg --armor --export (paste same key part) | apt-key add -

Once any needed keys are accepted, run sudo apt-get update once more to
verify they all took and get your cache all set up, then run an apt-get
upgrade to bring you up to date on everything.

4) download the pkg-config and xorg-server-dev per wiki.x.org :
If you wish to install the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver on a Debian
GNU/Linux or Ubuntu system that ships with Xorg 7.x, please ensure that
your system meets the following requirements:

    * development tools like make and gcc are installed
    * the linux-headers package matching the installed Linux kernel is
installed
    * the pkg-config and xserver-xorg-dev packages are installed
    * the nvidia-glx package has been uninstalled with the --purge
option and the file /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx does not exist.

5) download the current nvidia (version 9xxx) drivers, chmod +x NV*
them, then restart in "single" mode so you are not running X. Run the
nvidia sript: sudo ./NV*

6) Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and look for the "vesa" driver line, changing
"vesa" to "nvidia".

7) Once that all completes (it will need to compile a driver for you) go
ahead and boot into X, and look in the menu for the Nvidia config tool.
It's pretty slick for setting up your monitors.

Now, this all works beautifully so far with one caveat- switching from a
dual monitor to single monitor config hard crashes the driver and wedges
the machine. This is an issue for me since my second monitor is a
projector, and I don't want it on all the time. But if you plan to use
two actual monitors all the time (a nice setup) or just the one monitor,
then you will be all set.

As for the JACK stuff, there is a ton of documentation online that
should get you started. It's a little weird at first, but really, it's
all just a big patch bay.

Good luck-
Ian
