This is a good advice, using the open source NV drivers for usual stuff 
and might be enough:

I use the NVIDIA Drivers directly from their page but this includes some 
  compiling which is done with their installer script. I dont know if it 
works with the new 2.6.19 kernel, I had bad luck with the first 
prerelease from 64studio and revert back to 2.6.17.
Benefits of the driver are 3D acceleration and dual monitor.
