I may have spoken too soon. Attempting a more thorough test today, I 
found that jack would not connect at 96k. However, reinstalling the Alsa 
modules from synaptic recovered the situation and I was able to work 
normally in Ardour at 96k. Rebooting the machine recreated the fault. I 
reinstalled the Alsa modules and it worked again.

Perhaps you would suggest where I should look to help diagnose the 
problem.
