Hello Daniel
my apologies for not being able to test this earlier. I simply had no
spare partition left to play with a pristine installation.
Now I had the opportunity to try out the 32bit Version on a Core Duo
Laptop. I grabbed the "master" ISO from 12.6.2007 on
http://cdd.64studio.com/releases/64studio/
This Laptop has a ATI Radeon X1600 (but is was one of the more and more
rare models with Cardbus, which I need for my RME Multiface).
Basically, the results were similar: The installer selected vesa (which
is OK as the open source "radeon" driver doen't support the X1600 yet).
The problem was rather that this vesa configuration didn't work at all.
Again, using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg did the trick and gave me
a working vesa configuration (and for using the full resolution I
installed the closed source "fglrx" without the kernel module).
I investigated the generated xorg.conf files a bit and found out,
the reason it didn't work in first place were just the resolution
lines. The Laptop has a widescreen display 800x1280 and this got
detected corretly -- just VESA doesn't support this resolution.
The second version of xorg.conf generated by dpkg-reconfigure
used a more conservative aproach and added several fallback
resolutions for each color depth, and from these the 1024x768
worked.
Just wanted to report this -- well, from a users perspective
this could be sort of a problem; personally I don't mind because
this sort of problems is so common that it's almost routine ;-)
Cheers,
Hermann Vosseler
PS: If you need the two conf files and the XServer log, just tell me!
