Which packages do you need exactly? If they are only a few it might be
easier to just backport them to etch, rather than running
Debian/testing.
Git 1.5.2 has been backported already:

Debian/testing is most of the time in good shape, but if you are
developing an app it's not always nice to constantly change system
libraries, as it might be harder to track bugs.

We are planning to stick to etch till the next stable Debian release,
and to provide backports of the needed applications (mostly audio and
video). This way the risk of introducing new bugs is considerably
lower.
