Totem actually can now plays through jackd via the jack gstreamer
back-end, and according to my tests it doesn't perform that bad. You
may want to give it a try:

apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

(yes "-bad" doesn't sound good, but that is still better than the
"-really-bad" package, which also exists :)

About Ekiga, which system is it actually using for playback? Maybe we
could find some workaround for it as well, and have jack supported by
all the applications which come with 64 Studio, and so let jack
running by the default, it could be a strong point of 64 Studio wrt
other audio distros.

Ciao!
