This is the way I set up mine, since I always have Jack running (I have 
2 sound devices - RME Hammerfall on jack for pro stuff, and audigy 2 for 
all the rest.)

It might not be such a good idea if you only have one sound interface.  
I think the amount of apps that will not run with jack running then will 
be greater.

The "pre-check" might be worth looking into. perhaps some kind of script 
that exits with a message if jack is not running, and continues otherwise.
