 Hello Daniel,

 I must be missing something here, because I can't recreate the crash.

 What I do is:

 boot up
 don't start jack or anything else
 launch hydrogen
 open the pattern editor
 observe that none of the items are labelled "empty", although some have no
 description
 open the mixer
 observe that none of the items are labelled "empty", although some have no
 description
 click all over the unlabelled porttions
 nothing crashes

 I think my test is too simple, and I'm confused that I can't get any
 strips labelled "empty".

 Could you point me in the right direction on this problem?
