Press the F2 key to see the messages from the kernel.

It's probably that your machine is looking for a DHCP lease but not 
getting one. If so, hit ctrl-c to cancel the DHCP lookup, then when the 
machine has booted, check your settings in Desktop -> Administration -> 
Network.

Alternatively, your machine may be checking that your partitions are OK, 
which it will do every 30 reboots or so. This does slow down booting as 
well.
