Hmm, maybe I shouldn't be so quick to write these posts - this is sort 
of solved too. I edited the kernel command line to remove the vga= and 
splash= options, and
gnome now starts. At some point I will want to understand this problem 
more, in case I indeed want a graphical splash screen, but for now it's 
playtime!
