If you don't have DHCP on your network then you need to set up your 
interface manually. On the Gnome menu, try Desktop -> Administration -> 
Networking, select the interface you want and click on Properties.

After you have set the IP and gateway, then click OK to close that 
Properties window. If you have more than one interface, check the 
default gateway device tab is set correctly.

You should now click on the DNS tab of the Networking window and check 
your DNS server is listed there.
