I think this might be an authentication problem, which would implicate 
PAM. I'm wondering whether this is related to #366. I have also had 
problems on various machines since 2.0 with accessing Gnome system 
setting dialogs in the System -> Administration menu, such as 
Networking, User & Groups and Services.
