I just reproduced this bug with Synaptic-0.60 on GNOME-2.18 no trouble 
:( and I presume something similar is happening with root terminal as I 
can't get it to launch from the menu. I get the same error trying to run 
nautilus as root - surely this last is a bad idea anyway?

No idea of solution as yet.
