are you using the version from debian/stable (1.1.2-7)? It might work
only with kernel 2.6.18 (the default in debian/stable)..

According to the changelog here:

http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/contrib/i/ipw3945/current/changelog

the version in testing/unstable compile also with kernels >=
2.6.20. Please try to install that version:

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/i/ipw3945/ipw3945-source_1.1.2-7_all.deb
