The Plot thickens... It is ever worse than you thought.  It is hard 
coded to line 1129 of ghtml.c
Changed that and now it is using "R" as the currency symbol.

It also seems as if it has been a long time since the developers 
actually touched the code of this project.
I believe they should add a currency symbol selection in the "Settings" 
=> "Preferences" menu dialog.  The whole world is not a state in the US of A
