It sounds like X is not running. Most likely, automatic configuration of 
your video card has failed.

If you log in on the console (the terminal screen) as root, and type:

startx

what output do you see?

Also, please type:

lspci -v

There should be a section which describes your graphics card, something 
like this:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G550 AGP 
(rev 01) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
         Subsystem: Matrox Graphics, Inc. Millennium G550 Dual Head DDR

That would be very helpful for us to know.
