Hi Christian,
> - Where can I find info on the best settings for jack?
Try this page: http://lau.linuxaudio.org/jack/
Here are some tips for the settings window in Jack Control (qjackctl):
1. If you aren't using the soundcard inputs in a particular session, set
the Audio: drop-down menu to Playback Only - it improves performance a lot.
2. Set your Sample Rate: first. 44100 is best if you plan to burn audio
CDs, but some cheaper and on-board soundcards will only run at 48000,
because they rely on software resampling.
3. Then set Frames/Period: to 512 or lower, and watch the latency figure
change. Around 10ms latency is on the safe side for full duplex; you
shouldn't get any xruns at that figure. I seriously doubt any musicians
doing overdubs will hear the benefit of going much below 10ms latency.
3. Some soundcards prefer Periods/Buffer: to be set to 3, particularly
USB soundcards. Most others work best when set to 2 periods.

That depends on the packages you want :-)
If you want to follow bleeding-edge development, you can use:
deb http://apt.64studio.com/64studio/testing 64studio main
For packages from Debian etch, use:
deb ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main
where 'uk' is your nearest Debian mirror
Cheers!
Daniel
