I've tried that on a few old Ardour projects; it worked with some, but 
not others. I recall there was another file format change to do with 
panning, back in the 0.9x series - maybe that's the culprit.

I think the guiding principle here is that we shouldn't force users to 
have a major new version of an app before the new version is available 
as a stable release. Quentin's example of the control surface feedback 
being broken in the last Ardour beta is an illustrative one.
