I think the fact that the project file format seems to be different 
could make maintaining a parallel install difficult, from a user point 
of view. However, some people who have a lot of material recorded with 
Ardour 0.99.x will welcome the chance to stick to that version.

I suggest the following:

1. Keep the ardour-gtk package in the repository, but don't install it 
by default.

2. Call the new package ardour2 and make it the default.

Are there any packages which depend on Ardour, apart from 
ardour-session-exchange? If so, we could use the alternatives mechanism 
for now.
