Hi David,

What seems to happen with classical jackd is that you can max out one
core, then the DSP load counter (for example in qjackctl) wraps. You'll
see something like this, as load increases:

90%
95%
99%
0%
5%
7%

However, we have only been able to trigger this behaviour running
artificially high loads, such as four simultaneous instances of Jamin.
For practical purposes, classical jackd is perfectly usable on a
dual-core machine.

Since we're trying to push the high-performance side of Linux
multimedia, we are going to package jackdmp for multi-core users to try.
The trick is to get jackdmp packaged in such a way that you can install
it without screwing up your existing jackd installation, or having to
recompile apps. We think we've got this figured out now.

There's a manual here:

http://oprofile.sourceforge.net/doc/introduction.html

If you just want to measure system loads, there are simpler tools
available, such as Gnome System Monitor:

http://packages.debian.org/testing/gnome/gnome-system-monitor

Cheers!
