I believe Ubuntu 6.06 uses the 2.6.15 kernel, so there may well have 
been a regression in pcmcia support in 2.6.17. Please try the 2.6.18 
kernel (or wait for our package in the next release) and let us know if 
you're still having problems, so we can report this upstream to the 
pcmcia maintainers.

I also noticed this commit for 2.6.17-7:
