Yes indeed, I have an old Philips 15" TFT like that - worked fine. 
Perhaps your HDTV is too new to be in the X.org database, or the 
auto-probing fails for some reason.

I notice there is a script here called FasterDapper:

which among other things, disables IPv6 to speed up DHCP lease 
assignments. I'm not personally using IPv6 yet, but I suppose some 
people might be.

It could be a Gnome or Ardour bug then.

Thanks; sometimes X goes down and takes the keyboard and mouse with it, 
but the machine is still running.
