Hi Free,

I can confirm the problem is that the libgl1-mesa-dri package is missing 
from the 0.9.4 base install. Also we should have mesa-utils and its 
dependency freeglut3 so that people can run glxinfo and glxgears to test 
their framerate.

Kudos goes to my son William for discovering this bug. After you install 
libgl1-mesa-dri then Planet Penguin Racer works again :-)
