Yes that must be it.  I won't pursue this further from now because the 
new ALSA didn't fix my problem anyway.  I look forward to 0.9.6.

Let me add that I've been using 64Studio regularly on 4 different 
machines here (2 Opteron desktops, a 32-bit Athlon and now a Turion 
laptop) and have had very, very good results with it for all of my 
professional audio development needs.  I've been suggesting it to 
everyone that will lend an ear.
