As I told hrt is switched off, but hpet is not:

CONFIG_HPET_TIMER=y
CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC=y

but  also in the  stock Debian kernel HPET   is on, so  the hang might
probably have  another  origin. It might be  worth  to  try  the stock
Debian 2.6.18 as well to see if it hangs as well or not.
