At least you've found it now :-)

I would definitely recommend doing this the Debian way. There is a guide
here:

http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21

We currently have a 2.6.17 source package available, but I suggest you
wait for our 2.6.18 package, which will be available shortly.

Then you'll have to edit our config down to Pentium Pro SMP support and
whatever other hardware you have as modules. You should end up with a
much smaller kernel executable, but it's not exactly a straightforward
process, especially if you've never done it before. Is there someone at
your college with Linux kernel experience who could help you, maybe in
the IT department?

There could also be other people on this list who need 32-bit SMP
support, who could give you a hand to create and test a custom kernel
package.

Cheers!

Daniel
