One bodge I heard was: shut down Windows, power off, remove the power
cable for 15 seconds, re-attach it, boot into Linux. Sounds like voodoo,
but apparently it works for some people. I guess the cold boot causes
the MAC address to be reset.
Perhaps it's the Windows driver that is screwing up the MAC address
stored in the BIOS, rather than a hardware bug as such.
Another advantage to using a standard Ethernet card instead of the
built-in chipset is that you can move it to a lower priority slot on the
motherboard than the audio interface card. It seems that boards designed
for server use (e.g. Dual Opteron) put the on-board Ethernet on the
highest priority interrupt, and that's not always easy to change. It
makes perfect sense for a headless server in a datacentre, but it's not
so great for an audio workstation.
Cheers!
Daniel
