I would recommend the HP Pavilion series (not the HP/Compaq 'business' 
models). Free and I both have one - everything works except the memory 
card reader (which I don't use anyway, I prefer to leave the memory in 
the camera and connect with a USB cable). You can get them with Turion 
X2 dual-core CPUs.

You can get nVidia GeForce video in those Pavilions now, but I'd check 
reviews for X.org driver support first. (If you're doing presentations, 
it's especially important to check that the external VGA out is 
supported in the driver - some are a pain to get working.)

I'd recommend going for the 'Bright View' display in the 17" or 
widescreen size, as the cheaper displays aren't as good (which is what 
you'd expect).
