ps ax|grep hald

to make sure HAL is running.

It's going to be a little while yet. The bugfix 0.99.3 version of Ardour 
is not in Debian testing yet; we may need to create a custom package for 
that. In any case, 0.9.5 (hopefully the last release candidate for 1.0) 
and 1.0 itself should be out in the next two weeks.
