That's exactly the same chipset I have in my HP ze2000 notebook. It has 
been working fine - I'll try a fresh install of 0.9.4 on that notebook 
and see if that's still the case.

Are you sure that you haven't added a user who isn't a member of the 
audio group in the /etc/group file? If so, you'll see the audio volume 
applet in Gnome display a red and white cross icon, indicating that the 
audio interface cannot be opened.
